Gastric (stomach) ulcers are open sores that develop on the inside lining of the stomach. They are a common occurrence in dogs racing the Iditarod, presumably due to the extreme distance of the race although they are also found in some dogs that race shorter distances. It’s hypothesized that there is a link between exercise-induced hyperthermia and loss of gastric mucosal barrier function early in the development of ulcers.
