Panting is the primary means of cooling for dogs. At least 3 dogs were reported to have suffered from hyperthermia (over heating) in the 2017 Iditarod. One died, the other two were treated and survived. They were among 75 dropped dogs on a flight to Anchorage in the 2017 race. It is hypothesized that hyperthermia may play a role in gastric ulcer development.
